ABOUT
T. David Downs is a classical realist painter based in Brunswick, Georgia. Working exclusively in oil, he creates landscapes, wildlife portraits, and still-life paintings rooted in careful observation, memory, and a deep reverence for the natural world.
Downs studied classical painting at the Art Students League of New York and continued advanced independent study at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His approach is built on traditional methods: beginning with a tightly rendered drawing, developing a grisaille underpainting, and building color through a restrained, historically proven palette. Each painting reflects a commitment to honest craftsmanship and a desire to create works that endure across generations.
Much of Downs’s imagery is drawn from his experiences exploring the wild landscapes of South Georgia and Florida. Hiking and camping provide not only visual reference but emotional resonance; the scenes he paints are shaped as much by memory and feeling as by sight. His landscapes and wildlife scenes document the resilience and quiet defiance of life at the margins of human expansion while also recognizing that humanity itself is part of the natural world.
In parallel, Downs’s still-life paintings offer a more intimate reflection of these same ideas. Through careful arrangements of objects he explores the same themes of survival, memory, and interconnectedness on a smaller, quieter scale. Whether painting a remote salt marsh or a single gathered object, he approaches each subject with the same sense of humility and devotion.
Across all of his work, Downs seeks to evoke an immediate emotional response, a recognition of beauty, fragility, and the invisible ties that connect all living things.
